It's not washing so much as not using shampoo -- and not using shampoo is especially good for those with curly hair. A good way to get around this (or to start off) is to try shampooing your hair every other day and on each intermttent day wet your hair and massage your scalp or otherwise simply use conditioner in your hair. I use shampoo once every three or four days this way (I've thick hair with large curls and have done this at short, medium, and long lengths) but have gone as long as a week without much problem. It simply takes longer in the shower. :)
