Leave It To Miuccia

A handful of fashion designers have partnered with cell phone makers in recent years as part of a strategy to boost revenue and brand awareness. Unfortunately, the phones that came out of these deals were no great shakes.

In fashion, we look to Miuccia Prada for revolutionary design concepts and stunning execution. It comes as no surprise then that the intelligent designer is raising the bar for the "designer" cell phone, and indeed, cell phone design in general. Where other designers essentially slapped their names on existing (read: unexciting) devices, Prada collaborated with LG from the very beginning to create the KE850. The result, which is being touted as the world's first completely touch screen-operated phone, is quite covetable.

True esthetes--well, apart from those who reside in Korea or can afford a Vertu , anyway--have long been an underserved segment in the world cell phone market.  Here's hoping the Prada phone will help to reverse this trend.

Form + Function

The gadget blogs have largely been focusing on the technical specifications of the LG KE850 and drawing comparisons between it and the iPhone. The Prada phone more or less holds up to tech spec scrutiny. I'll comment on the form-related features that differentiate Miuccia's mobile from the competition (at least in the eyes of design conscious consumers):

- An elegant look. This phone is definitely NOT destined for the Razr status. You won't tire of this phone quickly as you would the Razr or those old Nokia fashion phones.

- The sleek white-on-black interface. Because let's be frank--it is chic looking. More pictures are availabile on Gizmodo.

- Custom ringtones and sounds, which promise to be better than those that came with your Razr.

- It comes with its own Prada leather case.

- It's tri-band, and as any good fashionista is aware, connectivity is a must in New York, London, Milan, and Paris...not to mention on jaunts to St Barts or Sardinia!
